PHRASES AND CLAUSES
A
Phrase is a group of words that does not make complete sense, does not
contain a finite verb, expressed or a understood , but
is a used as single part of speech. Come
at once. He came to see me. She was at the point of death.

A Clause is a group of words having a
subject and a predicate of its own but forming part of a sentence:- I know that
he is ill. The boy whom you saw is my brother. I went
after he had come.
Exercise 3
Point out sentences, clauses and phrases:
I
met him on the way. They did it in a careless manner. As I was going along, I
met him. I knew the name of the boy. I knew what the name of the boy was. This
the boy who helped me. If you do this , you will succeed. Come as soon as you
can. The clock that was lost has been found. There is a tree in front of my
house. There is a tree that stands in front of my house. Tell me when he will
arrive? Tell me the time of his arrival.
